A rodent problem can happen to anyone. Mice, rats, and squirrels enjoy the warm and dry coziness of houses in Kelowna, British Columbia, just as much as homeowners do.

Although these nibbling critters have their place in the outdoor ecosystem, they are destructive and dirty once they get into your home. Their urine and feces expose you to diseases, and their chewing destroys insulation, can cause leaks in water pipes and even cause fires when they expose electrical wires. Any of these problems could make calling a restoration contractor necessary.

Ongoing inspections are recommended, but you are not defenceless against these threats on your own. Follow these steps to rodent-proof your home.

1. Inspect your foundation
Mice are capable of forcing themselves through very small holes and cracks. Seal cracks or holes in the foundation with an appropriate masonry product.

2. Check all doors and windows
Gaps beneath doors or rotted material around a door or window frame invite rodents. Every year, you should examine your doors and windows and complete any necessary repairs.

3. Look at the roof
Animals will investigate loose shingles, deteriorating fascia, or broken attic vents. Check these areas and close all gaps. Plumbing vents and chimneys could also provide access and require inspection while you are up there.

4. Seal all pet food containers
Food attracts rodents. If a good meal is not available, then they will forage elsewhere. Place pet food in containers with secure lids.

5. Protect dry goods in the pantry
Just like pet food, your flour, sugar, rice and other staples should be in containers that can be tightly shut. Sweeping and wiping up crumbs regularly will also deny food to rodents during their nocturnal forays.

6. Keep the garbage shut
Bungee cords work well to hold down garbage bin lids. Ideally, homeowners will keep these refuse containers away from the house.

7. Spray rodent repellent
Applications of essential oils, like peppermint or clove, around your foundations and entry points can deter rodents. These strong odours are unpleasant to their sensitive noses.
